You may have heard about the health benefits of alkaline water, or you’re concerned that your drinking water is too acidic. Is there anything you can do to change this?

Alkaline water pitchers can help your drinking water increase its alkalinity so you’re left with drinking water that’s less acidic.

How does an alkaline water filter work?

When water is filtered, especially if you use reverse osmosis filtration, most of the minerals essential to our health are removed. While this leaves you with high quality filtered drinking water, it does change the pH level of the water and removes the minerals that are essential to our health.

In order to increase the alkalinity of water, minerals need to be added back to the water. This is where using an alkaline water filter pitcher can help. The filters used in an alkaline pitcher add back the minerals. The filter cartridge used by the pitcher features natural elements that contain minerals. As water passes through these elements, the minerals are added into the water.

This mimics the natural process of water flowing in a river, and obtaining minerals from rocks and soil.

Best alkaline water pitcher reviews

When finding the best alkaline water pitcher, we spent more than 40 hours researching water and what was important to consumers when drinking water. We read research papers, studies and articles about the different contaminants found in typical drinking water. We also researched water filters and how they work, and which ones are best to filter different contaminants.

To find out more about what’s in our water, we investigated information provided by the Water Quality Association and NSF International– this information is readily available online. It’s worth a read!

We also read articles and spoke to health professionals about alkaline water and its so-called health benefits.

While we couldn’t find scientific evidence about the effects of drinking alkaline water, there’s plenty of anecdotal information and evidence available.

Finally, we read forums and spoke to consumers about their drinking water preferences and what they thought about alkaline water.

We discovered that despite the science (or lack thereof), many consumers love the taste of alkaline water rather than ordinary tap water!

Our list of the best alkaline water pitchers were chosen because of their performance levels, ease of use, good value for money and are popular with consumers.

Please keep reading for reviews of each of the alkaline water filter pitchers.

One of the best alkaline filter pitchers according to consumer reviews is the Santevia Water Systems alkaline water pitcher.

Santevia’s filtration adds calcium, magnesium and other minerals back into your water, while also reducing chlorine taste and odors, metals, chemicals and other contaminants.

It comes with 1 filter included, which produces up to 1250 glasses of water (using an 8oz /226ml glass) before needing to be replaced. This is equal to around 80 gallons (300 litres) or approximately every 2 months.

The filter consists of 4 components. Granulated activated carbon removes heavy metals, chloramine and chlorine as well as other sediments. Tourmaline is a mineral that naturally transforms water into a more alkaline state, and it improves your water quality through its anti-bacterial properties. Maifan mineral stones add back essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, magnesium and selenium. And finally, calcium mineral balls add calcium to your water, creating a perfectly-balanced pH level for your water.

The Santevia alkaline water pitcher also features a reminder that tells you when it’s time to change the filter. However, some consumers have complained that this feature often stops working.

The pitcher comes in a range of colors: black, white, blue and green.

The alkaline water pitcher by Lake Industries gives you filtered water with added nutrients and minerals to provide you with the best alkaline drinking water.

The pitcher uses a 7-stage filter cartridge that includes carbon to remove sediments and heavy metals, an ION exchange resin, and tourmaline and mineral balls that add in essential nutrients and minerals that boost the pH level of your drinking water.

While an ION exchange resin normally removes fluoride, the resin used in the Lake Industries alkaline water pitcher doesn't remove fluoride. You  need to install a reverse osmosis water filter system under your sink and then use the water from this in your alkaline water pitcher. Or you could purchase an activated alumina filter to remove the fluoride.

Included in your filter purchase is 1 cartridge.

Replacements can be purchased online via Amazon, and it is recommended that the filter be replaced every 3 months.

The Lake Industries alkaline water pitcher removes up to 90% of all zinc, copper, lead and other pollutants. It leaves you with fresh filtered alkaline drinking water.

The pitcher is made from food-grade, BPA-free materials and has a slim design to easily fit in any refrigerator. The lid has been designed so that you can easily fill the reservoir without the need to remove the cover, while the spout easily pours the water. There is an ergonomic handle for comfort.

The reservoir has a 2.5 litre capacity (0.66 gallons).

Warranty information is available directly from the manufacturer via their website.

The Wamery alkaline water pitcher can hold up to 8 cups of water. It’s a smaller sized water pitcher so may not be great if you have a large family.

The water filter needs to be replaced every 2 months and there’s an LED indicator telling you when it’s time to replace it.. The filter replacement time is based on 24 cups being consumed each day. This is about 42 gallons. In colder months, when people drink less water, the filter will last longer.

When you purchase the water pitcher, Wamery includes a replacement filter cartridge

What we love about Wamery is that you can use any standard water filter in its alkaline water filter pitcher. There’s no need to spend a fortune on expensive filters. You can choose whatever filter suits your budget.

The included Wamery filters remove chemicals and impurities such as chlorine, giving you better tasting and smelling water. The pH level of Wamery filtered water is between 7 to 10, depending on your local tap water quality.

Finally, the purchase price is great for budget-conscious people.

The EHM alkaline water pitcher allows you to filter your tap water and increase its pH level in about 10 minutes.

The pitcher has a capacity of 3.5 litres, and gives you drinking water with a pH level of between 7.8 and 10.5. The pH level depends on the pH level of the source water.

It has a “smart fill” lid which has been designed so that you can fill the pitcher with water without having to remove the lid. The pitcher is made of medical grade plastic that is BPA-free.

The alkaline water pitcher features a 7-stage alkaline filter. It includes an ion exchange resin (that does not remove fluoride), activated carbon, far infrared ceramic balls, natural mineral stone and alkaline ceramic mineral balls.

It removes lead, copper, heavy metals, pesticides and other contaminants. Far infrared ceramic balls are an effective way to remove lead, chromium and other toxic heavy metals.

There are also chlorine reduction balls (which are nano-metal clusters) that reduce the amount of chlorine in your pitcher water. Tourmaline stones and maifan stones are used to raise the pH level and to add back essential minerals missing from acidic water. These essential minerals include iron, calcium and zinc.

It is recommended that with normal use (once per day), to change the filter every 90 days. Once the filter is removed from the packaging, it needs to be soaked in water for 10 minutes to activate. Please read the instructions for more information.

Warranty information is available by contacting the manufacturer directly.

The Lighthouse H2O alkaline water pitcher has an impressive 6-stage filtration system that’s been designed to not only increase the water’s alkaline levels but also restructures the water so that you can absorb water faster.

The powerful 6-stage water filter removes toxins, heavy metals, solids, and pesticides before remineralizing the water by adding back over 20 trace elements. This leaves your water tasting pure, without the typical strange taste that puts people off drinking water. And since the water is remineralized, you know you’re doing your body a favor by drinking it.

By balancing out the calcium and magnesium and negative hydroxol ions, the ORP (oxidation reduction potential) lowers to between -200 and -400. What does this mean? Free radicals are eliminated, to improve the quality of your water.

The filter restructures the water molecules- it transforms them into smaller hexagon shapes which supposedly helps with water absorption to increase your energy levels.

Have you owned a water pitcher with a filter that has leaked? We love that Lighthouse has thought about this, and designed a leak-proof cartridge that you simply screw into place. This stops unfiltered water from leaking into your pitcher.

There’s also a 60-day “countdown replacement indicator” that tells you when it’s time to replace your filter. When you purchase the pitcher, two filters are included in the package. This is great value!

The pitcher itself holds 3.5 liters of water (around 118 ounces) and is BPA-free. Its lid and handle have been designed not to break or fall off, something that cheap pitchers have a problem with.

We’ve chosen Dragonn as another of the best alkaline water pitcher filters, because of its performance and style, as well as popularity with consumers.

You’ll love that Dragonn uses a 7-stage filtration system that removes toxins such as zinc, copper, lead and other pollutants and contaminants. It has a high negative ORP to help increase your energy levels and improve your immune system.

When the water passes the natural stones and ceramics in the filter cartridge, this changes the structure of the water molecules, making them even smaller, into micro-molecules. This helps you absorb the water easily.

The BPA-free pitcher has a capacity of 3.5 liters (around 118 ounces) which is a great size for families. It’s made of food grade and ABS materials.

The pitcher’s been designed to easily fit in any sized refrigerator. It has an easy-to-fill lid that lets you fill the pitcher without taking the lid off. The spout is easy to pour from, with reduced spillage and mess. We like that the handle is ergonomic, making it comfortable to use the pitcher, even when it’s full!

When buying the Dragonn alkaline water pitcher, you’ll receive one water filter cartridge with replacements easily available on Amazon. One filter cartridge lasts approximately 60 days, depending on your level of usage.

Remember to remove the stickers at the bottom of the cartridge before using it.

For the sceptics out there who don’t believe in the health benefits of alkaline water, the Reshape Water alkaline water filter is one for you!

We’re impressed that Reshape Water has proven lab results available, and extensive certification. The company tests its filters using an independent U.S.-based laboratory that allows them to see how much the filters can remove. Exact measurements are available to prove Reshape Water’s claims.

Among the contaminants that can be removed by its pitcher filter are volatile organic compounds and disinfection by-products, as well as other typical toxins and contaminants.

The filter cartridge is designed to filter faucet water quickly and efficiently. The cartridge contains FIR balls, ION exchange resins, activated carbon and negative potential particles. This helps to alkalize and remineralize tap water within minutes.

We think it’s great that each filter lasts up to 75 days and can filter at least 79 gallons of water (around 300 liters). This is a better-performing filter than those found in most other alkaline water pitchers we researched.

The alkaline levels of the water can be raised up to 9.5pH. The filter adds back natural, healthy minerals by releasing the best amount of potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium needed for our bodies. The quality of the water is excellent, and it’s much healthier for you.

The filtration also lowers the negative ORP so that it’s between -200 and -400 points. This makes the water easier to absorb.

What’s more to love about this alkaline water pitcher? It’s been made with commercial-grade ABS plastic to help it last longer. It fits neatly inside your refrigerator or can sit on your countertop without taking up too much room.

It’s easy to clean, and is BPA-free and food grade. There are various certifications available, such as SGS certification, and the company is a member of the Water Quality Association.

Claro’s alkaline water pitcher is another of our choice for best alkaline water pitcher that we’ve reviewed for you.

The pitcher holds around 118 ounces (3.5 liters) of water that it fitlers and alkalizes for you, to give you better tasting and healthier water whether it’s for drinking or cooking with.

What do we like about the Claro alkaline water pitcher? We love the design- the handle doesn’t feel like it’s going to fall off when you’re pouring yourself a glass of water. It’s very sturdy and long-lasting.

We also love that the replacement filters are affordable and much cheaper than other replacement filters on the market. When you’re replacing filters every 2 months, this cost can add up. The cheaper replacement cost shows that Claro is a company that thinks about value for money for its customers. We’re very impressed by this.

The design of the pitcher means that it can fit in your refrigerator or you can leave it on your countertop and it won’t get in the way. It isn’t bulky, and the filters are very easy to handle and replace.

We also love that Claro sometimes has great bulk purchase offers, so check to see what’s on offer at the moment.

Health Metric is a brand that hasn’t been on Amazon as long as the other brands we’ve reviewed, but it’s becoming a popular brand of alkaline water pitcher.

The pitcher can produce water with an alkaline of 9 which is higher than many other pitchers.

We’re impressed that the filter cartridge used the Health Metric alkaline water pitcher is double the size of other models on the market. It filters up to 105 gallons of water which is the equivalent of 1600 glasses of water. This is great for budget-conscious consumers who don’t like having to constantly replace their water filters. It’s also great if you have a large household or drink a lot of water.

How do you know when you need to replace the water filter? There’s an indicator on the lid of the pitcher which lets you know when it’s time to replace the filter.

Another reason why we’re impressed with the Health Metric alkaline pitcher is that it’s filter has 7-stages of filtration and conditioning. What does this mean? It means that not only does the filter remove the typical chlorine, pesticides and other basic contaminants in your water, it can also remove fluoride, lead and arsenic. There’s no guarantee that it can remove 100% of these contaminants, but the Health Metric performs better than a standard Brita water filter.

Finally, the company will replace your pitcher or filter cartridge if you have any issues with them.

While Health Metrics claims that its pitcher can filter water quickly, some consumers say that the filtration is slow. This is common for pitchers that use filters with multiple stages. The water has to pass through several filtration levels, which is what increases the time taken to filter. In comparison, a basic water filter such as Brita doesn’t have a comprehensive filtration process so it’s a faster pitcher. If you want healthier water, you have to wait longer!

Other typical complaints from consumers about the Health Metrics pitcher is that the quality of the pitcher itself isn’t as good as other brands. The lid is flimsy and difficult to handle.

The Seychelle alkaline water filter is impressive. It’s alkaline filter is the only one on the market that is made and tested in the U.S.A. The company is based in California. If U.S.A.-made is important to you, then you’ll be pleased with this pitcher.

The filter lasts for up to 3 months which is longer than most other alkaline filters on the market. They can filter out impurities as well as fluoride and bacteria.

However, the U.S.A. filters probably contribute to the higher overall price when compared with other alkaline pitchers. The price is around 3 times more expensive than other brands on the market. Replacement filters are also expensive.

The pitcher has a capacity of 2 liters of water, however it also comes in a 1 liter model if you prefer something a little smaller. This isn’t as large as other pitchers that can hold up to 3.5 liters of water. If size is an issue, then the Seychelle may not be the best choice for you.

Review

The Oxa Smart Alkaline Water Pitcher has a filter with 7 stages of filtration including the alkalizing filter to add back minerals such as calcium and selenium to help improve your overall health. Impurities and contaminants such as chlorine, heavy metals and bad tastes and smells can be removed by the filter to give you better tasting water.

We like the sleek design of the pitcher and that it’s compact- it fits in most refrigerators and doesn’t take up a lot of space like other bulky pitchers on the market. The ergonomic design of the spout and handle makes it easy to hold and pour. The pitcher is BPA-free.

We also like that you receive two free replacement filters when you purchase the Oxa pitcher! The filters last up to 2 months each which is standard for an alkaline water filter. Having the two free replacements included means you have up to 6 months before you need to purchase a replacement filter.

How much water does the Oxa smart alkaline water pitcher hold? While the pitcher has a capacity of 2.5 liters, due to the size of the filter, the space in the pitcher reserved for filtered water only holds 1.5 liters. This is about 4 cups of water. Oxa claims that the pitcher can hold up to 10 cups of water, but this includes the water that hasn’t yet passed through the filter.

Some consumers complain about the low capacity- if you have a family, the Oxa pitcher wouldn’t be the best option for you. Choose one of the other alkaline water pitchers we’ve reviewed on this post. But for single person households or couples, the Oxa would hold enough water.

Oher consumers have complained about the lid being difficult to remove- it doesn’t come off easily like lids from other alkaline water pitchers. This is frustrating if you use your alkaline pitcher a lot. Also the filter replacement indicator dial doesn’t work properly.

Finally, while the design is compact in terms of the width, the extra height means that some consumers find it hard to sit the pitcher on a shelf in the fridge.

The AccuaPura water filter pitcher hasn’t been on the market for as long as other alkaline pitchers that we’ve reviewed in this post.

The company offers a 30-day money back guarantee which makes your purchase less risky, especially not knowing the brand as well as other popular pitchers. The company states that if you aren’t satisfied with your purchase, they will issue you a full refund without asking questions.

The filter removes typical heavy metals, copper, bacteria, viruses, odors and tastes that make drinking water unpleasant. And as expected, being an alkaline filter, it creates alkaline ionized water. The filter only has 3 systems instead of the usual 7, which means that the water doesn’t filter everything out. Due to the smaller filter, it doesn’t take as long to filter the water as it would in other alkaline water pitchers.

The BPA-free pitcher has a flip top lid, making it easier for you to open the lid when refilling with water. However some consumers state that the lid doesn’t fit on the pitcher properly. Some consumers leave the lid off when pouring water.

There is an LCD digital display which lets you know when it’s time to replace the filter. Make sure you don’t immerse the lid in water or else it will damage the LCD display.

The pitcher has a water capacity of 3.5 liters, which is larger than some of the other pitchers we’ve reviewed here. Note that the amount of filtered water that the pitcher holds is only 2 liters- the remaining capacity is water that hasn’t yet passed through the filter, which sits in the top compartment as with other water filter pitchers.

Best Alkaline Water Pitcher Buying Guide

Frequently Asked Questions

How do alkaline water pitchers work?

Alkaline water pitchers work by removing impurities in water but then adding back important nutrients to help alkalize the water.

Ordinary tap water and bottled water is generally slightly acidic. This is because the structure of the water molecules is changed before the water reaches our taps.

We’ve been told about the high acid levels in drinks such as Coke, and who can forget the famous experiment of a tooth rotting in a glass of Coke?

While most of us might think it’s the sugar content of Coke that causes the tooth to turn black, it’s in fact the high acidity levels that does most of the damage.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking, that’s an extreme example, and who would leave a glass of Coke in their mouth overnight anyway?

But if we know that Coke is highly acidic, what must we think about water? Since water is natural and plain-tasting, it’s safe to assume that water is neutral- that it isn’t alkaline or acidic, right?

Wrong!

While tap water isn’t as acidic as Coke, it’s pH level is around 6.5. What does this mean on the pH scale?

A pH scale measures from zero to 14, with zero being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. Water’s pH level is somewhere in the middle.

Each point in the pH scale is a factor of 10. Something that has a pH level of 4 is 10 times more acidic than something with a pH level of 5. This gives you an idea of how we measure acidity.

Tap water has a pH level of around 6.5, while the ideal pH level in people is 7.365. Therefore, water is around 10 times more acidic than our ideal pH level.

Knowing all of this….

Advanced alkaline water filters such as those in an alkalizing machine split water into two streams, and most discard the acidic water (or at least allow you to use it for cleaning purposes rather than drinking). You’re then left with alkaline water.

An alkaline water pitcher is a little different, because minerals are added to the tap water which alter the pH balance of your water so that it’s more alkaline than it was beforehand.

Ordinary tap water and bottled water is generally slightly acidic. This is because the structure of the water molecules is changed before the water reaches our taps.

What is the best alkaline water pitcher to buy?

When choosing the best alkaline water pitcher to buy, the size and design may be an important factor. Some people, especially during the warmer months, prefer to store their pitcher in the refrigerator. Some of the water pitchers we have reviewed have a slim design to allow for storage in a refrigerator door. Others are too large and need to be stored on a refrigerator shelf.

Other small differences in the pitchers that may impact on your decision include the design of the handle (ergonomic is better) as well as whether the lid needs to be removed to refill the pitcher. Those that don’t require the lid to be removed will be easier for you to handle. This is important if you have kids who are old enough to pour themselves a cup of water- ease of use will prevent them from dropping the pitcher or spilling water.

Is an alkaline water pitcher filter the most effective?

One of the great things about an alkaline water filter is that it not only adds back essential nutrients and raises the pH level, but it filters out many of the heavy metals and contaminants found in ordinary tap water. So if you do not otherwise use a water filter, by using an alkaline water filter pitcher you will have the benefits of filtered water as well as alkaline water.

However, keep in mind that not all contaminants in water can be removed by an alkaline water filter pitcher. They are NOT the most effective filters for removing many contaminants. And although some alkaline water filters use an ion exchange resin, the resins have not been engineered to remove fluoride. This may confuse some people who know that an ion exchange resin used in other filters removes the fluoride. This is not the case with an alkaline water filter.

If you want to have alkalized water as well as filtered water and want to remove fluoride, you will need to invest in a reverse osmosis water filter system. This will filter your tap water and remove the fluoride. By filling your alkaline water filter pitcher with the water from the reverse osmosis tank, you will have alkaline water with only a small percentage of fluoride.

Don’t forget, if you’re in the U.K. or Australia, the word “pitcher” is another word for jug. If you’re looking for the best alkaline water filter jug, you’ve come to the right place.

When you read our best alkaline water filter pitcher reviews, you’ll learn that some of the pitchers allow you to choose your water’s pH level. Most pitchers have BPA-free components, which is important to many people.

You also need to decide what pitcher capacity you need for your household. Some alkaline pitchers are better for smaller households because they can’t hold as much water. Others, like the EHM alkaline water pitcher, are larger and more suited for families.

Although there’s no hard evidence available, it’s thought that eating more alkaline foods and drinking alkaline water can contribute to a better balanced and healthier body, by reducing the acidity levels in the body. The positives and negatives of drinking alkaline water were discussed in a Wall Street Journal article in 2016.

While Home Health Living isn’t in a position to make or validate any such health claims, we respect there are different ways to have a healthier lifestyle, and what doesn’t work for one person may work for someone else.

If you believe in the health benefits of drinking alkaline water, then using an alkaline water pitcher, such as one by Santevia or EHM,  is a convenient way to access alkaline water.

Most water filter pitchers don’t have the ability to produce alkaline water, which is why you need an alkaline water pitcher.

Home Health Living has investigated which water filter pitchers provide alkaline water. This post shares reviews and information about the best alkaline water pitcher currently on the market. We let you know where you can buy the pitchers, and give you other buying advice and information.

Finally, the best alkaline water filter pitchers can be purchased worldwide, so if you’re in the U.S., Australia, the U.K. or Canada, you’ll be able to buy an alkaline water filter pitcher from most large retailers such as Amazon. Here's the best alkaline water pitcher in the U.K.

In conclusion

Using an alkaline pitcher is just one way to increase the minerals in your body, especially those that are naturally found in water but are filtered out. An alkaline water filter pitcher is also a great way to filter out many contaminants and heavy metals found in tap water.
