Is Pump Drainage Important?

When you use a dehumidifier, there are three different ways that water is collected and emptied. It can be collected and stored in the unit’s water bucket, which you need to empty when the bucket is full.

If this option doesn’t sound appealing, you can choose a unit that comes with a built-in pump. The pump moves the water up the drain hose and away from the unit and drains it. This is great when you need to place the dehumidifier in a basement, because the water doesn’t have to drain near the basement but can be pumped out to a higher location.

The final option is to use gravity drainage. This is when you use a standard garden hose to connect to the dehumidifier, which drains the water from the unit using gravity.

Dehumidifiers either come with a built-in pump, or you can buy your own hose and condensate pump to connect to your dehumidifier.

The purpose of pump drainage is to pump water to a location above or far away from the unit.

You need to think about what option suits you and your home- you might not want to be constantly emptying the water bucket when it gets full. But don’t be fooled into thinking that the pump drainage option is what makes one dehumidifier model better than the other.

Some dehumidifier units that don’t have a built-in pump are better quality than dehumidifiers that do have a built-in pump. If a unit doesn’t have a built-in pump, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have the water pumped up and away from the unit. It just means you need to buy your own condensate pump and garden hose separately.

We recommend reading reviews of all the best 70 pint dehumidifiers and choosing the one that’s the best quality. If you need to buy extra components to pump the water out, don’t think of this as a negative- it’s better to buy a reliable, great quality dehumidifier that will give you years of use, even if you have to buy extra components for drainage.

best 70 pint dehumidifier

How many square feet does a 70 pint dehumidifier cover?

Most of the 70 pint dehumidifiers we have reviewed in this post cover areas of up to 4500 square feet, but this depends on how humid the room is. For humid spaces like basements, the dehumidifier would cover a smaller area.

What does a 70 pint dehumidifier mean?

Some people are confused with the term “70 pint dehumidifier”. They think that the water bucket can store 70 pints when this isn’t correct.

A 70 pint dehumidifier means that under normal conditions, the dehumidifier will remove up to 70 pints of water per day providing the space has a 60% humidity level at a temperature of 80 degrees.

70 pint dehumidifiers usually come with some extra features such as a digital display, programmable settings and auto shut off features. This allows you to preset the dehumidifier so that it can run without you having to be at home, and if the water tank is full, the unit shuts off automatically. This is handy if you use your 70 pint dehumidifier in your basement. Let’s face it, you don’t want to be running down to the basement checking on your dehumidifier every half an hour!

How many years does a dehumidifier last?

A dehumidifier used in a home typically lasts between 3 to 5 years depending on how often you use your dehumidifier and whether you regularly maintain your unit. The more you use your dehumidifier, the shorter the lifespan.

Best 70 Pint Dehumidifier Review 2018

best 70 pint dehumidifier review

hOmeLabs 9 Gallon (70 Pint) Dehumidifier Energy Star Safe Mid Size Portable Dehumidifiers for Basements Large Rooms up to 4000 Sq Ft with Fan Wheels and Drain Hose Outlet to Remove Odor and Allergens

If you’re looking for an effective, modern-looking dehumidifier that does the job without draining your wallet, the HomeLabs 9 gallon dehumidifier is a great choice.

It’s suitable for room sizes and spaces up to 4000 square feet, which is perfect to use in your basement, cellar or large living area. The unit removes up to 9 gallons of moisture per day and has a tank capacity of 1.6 gallons.

It features a touch control panel, drain hose outlet, a washable filter, built-in wheels and handles, auto restart function, shut off and defrost function and allows a custom humidity level between 35% and 85%.

I like that the dehumidifier has the option to adjust to your ideal moisture setting, letting the unit operate continuously for 24 hours, at which time the tank will be full of water. The unit will then shut off automatically, ready for you to empty the tank. Your other option, if you can’t be bothered keeping track of the unit is to run a garden hose via the drain hose outlet so that the dehumidifier drains itself continuously. This is perfect for a set-and-forget set up.

There are times when you’ll want to run your unit at a high speed, especially if you live in a humid climate and during the summer months when the weather can be humid. The dehumidifier has a turbo mode that increases the fan speed to high.

If you’re worried that the fan is too loud and will distract you while you’re entertaining guests, watching television or sleeping, the fan is quiet when it’s on the low setting. HomeLabs has thought about your needs, and made sure that the unit isn’t loud or clunky-looking.

Most dehumidifiers are an eyesore, but the HomeLabs dehumidifier has a sleek, clean design, and features built-in wheels and handles making it convenient for you to move the unit around when needed.

Something to keep in mind is not to use the dehumidifier in a room where you’re using an evaporative cooler- this is because dehumidifiers emit heat when they’re being used. It’s also not intended for spaces that are less than 2500 square feet.

Frigidaire FAD704DWD Energy Star 70-pint Dehumidifier

Best Affordable 70 Pint Dehumidifier

If cost is an important factor to you, then we recommend the Frigidaire FAD704DWD dehumidifier. It’s a smaller unit, so suitable for smaller spaces. This is great if you have a smaller room to dehumidify- you don’t want to waste your money on an oversized unit that will cost more to operate.

For a smaller-sized 70-pint dehumidifier, the Frigidaire dehumidifier is a good choice, especially for use in smaller rooms. The Frigidaire is suitable for rooms up to 1400 square feet.

It features a 2-speed fan, bucket full indicator, an anti-bacterial mesh filter and a digital humidity read out.

The dehumidifier has been designed to make it a space-saver, rather than something large and clunky that takes up too much room. It has top handles, side handles and caster wheels, making it easy for you to move the unit around.

The antibacterial mesh filter helps to reduce bacteria and other allergens in the air and should be changed regularly. It’s important to have an antibacterial filter because it helps to reduce mold and bacteria in the air, something that can cause health problems for people with asthma and allergies.

When the unit is in a suitable place, you can run it continuously and have the unit drain automatically via a hose.

There are two fan speeds which is great for flexibility- you can choose the mode you want the unit to operate in.

The water tank has a 16.3 pint capacity, and it’s conveniently located at the front of the unit, making it easy to remove. The water tank has a handle and a splash guard.

Once the unit has reached capacity, it shuts off automatically. This is great because you don’t have to worry about the tank overflowing and having to keep an eye on the dehumidifier throughout the day. Just set and forget- the unit will shut off when it’s ready to be emptied. Too easy!

If you’re budget-conscious, you’ll be happy to know that the Frigidaire is energy efficient and a money saver as it runs on a low temperature.

I really like that the power cord is extra-long, so you won’t need an extension cord.

Electrolux owns the Frigidaire brand, which is something many consumers are comfortable knowing.

Keystone KSTAD70B 70 Pt. Dehumidifier

The Keystone dehumidifier is another popular model of dehumidifiers, and offers a few different features not found in the previous two dehumidifiers I’ve reviewed.

This dehumidifier has been designed for rooms up to 4500 square feet, and features normal, turbo and auto-defrost settings.

What I like about this dehumidifier is that it has a transparent water level indicator on the water tank. This is great if you’re someone who worries about how much water is in the tank, but you don’t want to stop the unit and open the tank to check. The water indicator is a great and simple way to keep an eye on the water level.

You have the option of buying a garden hose and attaching it to the dehumidifier to use the continuous draining option.

There is a removable dust filter which filters out dust, bacteria and allergens in the air.

There’s a 24 hour timer, and an auto restart function which is great for when there is a power outage.

Ivation 70 Pint Energy Star Dehumidifier – Large-Capacity For Spaces Up To 4,500 Sq Ft – Includes Programmable Humidistat, Hose Connector, Auto Shutoff / Restart, Casters & Washable Air Filter

The Ivation dehumidifier has a large capacity water tank that’s great for rooms up to 4500 square feet, and is compact yet powerful enough to do the job.

It has a programmable humidistat so you can control the humidity level depending on how humid the room is. The display is a bright LED display, making it easy to read when you’re adjusting the settings. There’s also a timer you can set, and an auto defrost function.

You can choose to set the dehumidifier with a high fan or low fan, depending on your preferences.

There’s a hose connector available so that the unit can empty itself continuously, and you don’t  need to worry about it. The dehumidifier shuts off automatically once its full and needs to be empty, if you decide not to operate it continuously with a garden hose. And if there’s a power outage, the unit restarts itself once the power is back on.

I like that there’s a washable air filter to filter out bacteria, allergens and dust in the air. It’s great that you can wash and reuse the filter, rather than have to dispose it and buy a new one each time.

Danby DDR070BDWDB Energy Star 70 pint Dehumidifier

The Danby dehumidifier isn’t the best looking unit, however it’s a plain, simply and clean design, and doesn’t looking as industrial as other dehumidifiers on the market.

It has a 12.7 pint water tank capacity, and is great for use in rooms up to 4500 square feet.

You can choose between two fan speeds, which allows you to increase the speed on days that are very humid.

The water tank can be accessed from the front, and there is a full-tank indicator which is handy when you need to know its time to empty the tank.

I like the 24 hour on/off timer, so you can set and forget about the dehumidifier.

The unit is energy efficient, and it operates at a low temperature, saving you money.

Honeywell DH70W Energy Star 70-Pint Dehumidifier

Honeywell is a very popular brand, which is why I’ve chosen the Honeywell dehumidifier as one of the best on the market to review.

It’s suited to rooms that are medium to large sized, and it’s perfect for basements.

The water tank is detachable, and it has a handle and anti-spill tank stand. If you want the dehumidifier to drain continuously, you can connect a hose to the unit.

I like that the unit is energy saving and has a 24 hour timer so you can set it and forget it. It operates on a low temperature, which saves energy and doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Whynter RPD-702WP Energy Star Portable Dehumidifier with Pump, 70-Pint

The Whynter RPD-702WP energy star dehumidifier has a water tank capacity of 8.5 liters and can dehumidify up to 33 liters of moisture per 24 hours.

It has an auto restart function and an auto shut off function when the water tank is full and needs to be emptied.

I like that you can adjust the humidity level, choosing between 30% and 90% humidity depending on your home’s needs. This makes the dehumidifier great for homes in all locations.

To help prevent frost build up, there’s an auto defrosting function. This is great because frost can damage a dehumidifier and stop it from working. This is important if you live in an area that is cold and frosty.

There’s also a condensate pump that helps push water up or over a longer distance, so you don’t have to rely on gravity to push the water through.

Friedrich 70 Pint Dehumidifier with Built-In Drain Pump, D70BPA

The final dehumidifier I’ve included in my list of the best 70 pint dehumidifier models on the market, is the Friedrich D70BPA dehumidifier.

It has a built-in drain pipe that allow the water to be moved either vertically or horizontally and up to 15 feet. There’s a 6 foot power cord which is great if your dehumidifier unit isn’t very close to the power outlet.

You can select the continuous drainage option and connect a hose to your unit. This means you don’t have to worry about the water tank filling up and needing to be emptied when it’s full.

There’s a washable slide-out filter which is great because you can wash it and reuse it rather than have to throw it out and buy a replacement.

The unit itself has a display showing the room temperature and humidity level, so that you can keep an eye on the humidity level in the room and switch the unit off when it doesn’t need to run anymore.

There’s also a 24 hour on/off timer so you can set the unit to run for a particular amount of time.

The Bottom Line

Read through all these reviews but still confused?

If you need a built-in pump with your dehumidifier unit then we suggest the Friedrich. If have a built-in pump isn’t important but you’d still like the option of pump drainage, then we suggest the Frigidaire and buying your own condensate pump to use in the unit. This second option is more cost effective as the Friedrich is a lot more expensive than the Frigidaire, even though you’ll have to buy your own garden hose and condensate pump for the Frigidaire.
