In this post, I’m going to share with you which essential oils help with snoring. As we’ve seen, essential oils can be used to help with all kinds of health problems: there are essential oils for hair loss and to combat stress. But firstly, are there any studies that support the use of essential oils for snoring?
Back in 2004, a study by the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in the U.K. found that using essential oils helped stopped snoring in many of its 140 subjects. Subjects were given an essential oil mixture either as a throat gargle or a spray. Both methods were effective- 82% of subjects using the spray and 71% of subjects using the gargle reported that their snoring reduced. You can read more about that study here.

What causes snoring?
Snoring can be caused by different things, but one common cause is nasal congestion. Do you find yourself only snoring if you have a cold or flu? Now you know why. Other causes include ageing, obesity, and dehydration before sleep.
Some people snore if they have hay fever or other allergies, while some people snore because of dry air. This is when a humidifier might help- you can read more about humidifiers here.
What’s the best essential oil for snoring?
There are several essential oils to stop snoring.
Sweet marjoram essential oil is the best essential oil for snoring issues. But don’t confuse sweet marjoram with wild marjoram (which is also known as oregano). The two oils have different properties.
Sweet marjoram helps the respiratory system, which plays a role in snoring. Snoring occurs when your throat muscles relax and your tongue moves back towards your throat. The walls of your throat vibrate, which is the snoring sound you hear. When you inhale the scent of sweet marjoram, you help open the airways, which will reduce snoring.
A muscle relaxant, sweet marjoram is also great for helping headaches, shingles, chronic fatigue, cold sores, and other fungal and viral infections.
Sweet marjoram is a natural antiseptic and analgesic, and is also antiviral and antibacterial. It’s used as a remedy for irritable bowel syndrome and can ease menopausal symptoms.
In short, sweet marjoram is a versatile essential oil that is a must-have for anyone practising aromatherapy!
If you’re using sweet marjoram essential oil to help with snoring, remember that it might take you a few weeks to see results. Some people report quick results within a couple of days, while for others it may take a few weeks.
