While essential oils have long been used in aromatherapy, they have many other uses around the home. Did you know that there are essential oils for pest control if you prefer a natural alternative to keeping pests out of your home?

Certain essential oils are a natural way to deter pests from your home, rather than relying on harsh chemicals. That said, essential oils can still be extremely potent and should be handled with care.

So which essential oils are suitable for protecting your home from creepy crawlies like ants, cockroaches, fleas, lice, moths, spiders and rodents?

Peppermint Oil

This is considered the most effective oil to use for pest control purposes, as it is toxic to insects and has a distinctive smell they loathe.

Put 5 drops on a cotton ball and place around the house to repel insects. Replace them once a month.

If you have an ant problem, you can make a spray for skirting boards and other entry points around the home, as well as on kitchen counters and cabinets. Place 30ml of peppermint oil and 30ml of water into a spray bottle and shake well.

Peppermint oil can be used neatly by placing an undiluted line along a crevice where insects can get in. If you’re not sure where they’re getting in, mix 1.5 cups of water and 12 drops of peppermint oil. Spray on cotton wool balls and place around the home. You can also use peppermint oil for wasp control!

Eucalyptus oil

This natural oil has a potent smell and is particularly useful if you are wanting to kill cockroaches. Add a few drops to water and spray wherever you’ve noticed evidence that they’ve invaded your home!

Place a few drops of the oil on cotton wool balls and put in affected areas such as under the fridge, and inside cabinets and wardrobes, or near rubbish bins to deter flies.

Orange Oil

Not so well-known is the use of orange oil for pest control; it is effective against ants, crickets, spiders, wasps, fleas, lice and ticks. While some believe it can kill termites, this is one particular pest problem that you are much better off going straight to the professionals.

Lemon Grass Oil

If fruit flies are a problem, mix 20 drops of lemongrass oil with half a cup of warm water and spray on kitchen counters, cabinets, fridges and walls. It is most effective when applied for 2 or 3 days in a row.

To prevent fleas on your pet, mix 1.5 cups of water and 15 drops of lemongrass oil in a bottle and spray on your pet’s coat once a week. Alternatively you could add a couple of drops to the shampoo that you use to bathe your pet.

Tea Tree Oil

The pungent scent of tea tree oil is useful in bug control. A rag soaked in this oil can be left in the kitchen to deter pests like flies.

Lavender Oil

Lavender is helpful for more than just helping you to relax – the scent also drives insect away! Lavender oil can also be added to body lotion if you are looking for a more natural personal insect repellent.

Citronella Oil

Apart from burning candles to ward off mosquitoes, citronella can also be used in insect repellent sprays and oils. This oil helps to repel fleas, flies and moths and is also effective on cockroaches. Citronella is one of the best essential oils for pest control!
