How to remove humidity from a room without a dehumidifier?
How do you know if your home is humid?
When your home is humid, you can usually tell and not just by feeling it in the air. You can sometimes see dampness on your floor, and if you have carpet it can feel damp too.
Sometimes you will notice that your doors and cupboards won’t shut properly because the moisture in the air has caused the home to move slightly (this also happens during a drought or dry weather).
There are some simple steps you can take to remove humidity in a room. The first is to open a window so that the room can dry up. Often this will be enough to remove humidity- I like to open my bathroom window and within 30 minutes the moisture has gone.
Humidity occurs when air doesn’t circulate and you have moisture in the air.
Opening the window will help the air in the room circulate.
Another way to help circulate moist air is by using your air conditioner. However, if you use evaporative coolers this may make the room more humid. Refrigerated air conditioners work best, which is why they are used in humid and tropic climates.
When cooking in the kitchen, use the exhaust fan to circulate moist air in the kitchen and surrounding spaces and rooms. This will draw the moist air up the vent and out of the home.
In the summertime when you have rainy days, you probably hang your wet washing on a clothes horse that you keep inside your home, perhaps in your laundry. The moisture from the clothes fills the air in the room, making it feel humid.
The best way to deal with this is to hang the clothes outside again once it stops raining, or to open a nearby window (so long as rain can’t get into the home!) to let the moist air out of the room.
Use natural products from your pantry
Charcoal briquettes are an excellent way to remove moisture in a room and also remove any odors. These can be placed in a large bowl in a room, and will help draw out the moisture from the air. And since charcoal is natural, it’s safe to use in your home!
Make sure you put some charcoal briquettes in humid spaces and rooms around your home such as in your garage, basement or closet.
Another natural ingredient you probably have sitting in your pantry is rock salt. Rock salt is excellent at dehumidifying, which is why it’s use to dehydrate vegetables such as olives! Just fill a small bowl with rock salt and leave it somewhere in the room.
And don’t forget to use indoor plants that are known for absorbing moisture! We’ve written a blog about the best bathroom plants that absorb moisture.
One final word
I know you probably don’t want to spend the money but there are many dehumidifiers on the market for different sized rooms and budgets. We’ve written several reviews about the best dehumidifiers on the market. This really is the best way to remove humidity from your home.
But in the meantime, these natural ways of removing humidity in the home will help you feel more comfortable, however nothing beats using an actual dehumidifier! Especially if you live in a humid climate or your house is large and has an open plan space. Otherwise, you’ll need a LOT of salt or charcoal!
